Did you ever tell us exactly what this steam engine DID back in its working life? What exatly did it POWER? Sorry but i volunteer at a train museum and I know some steam tractor enthusiasts, so its going to bug me until i figure this out. :-) lovely shot and thanks for keeping our history "alive".

Sue Capuano replied:

Thanks for your comment and interest. I'm not exactly positive about what the engine did but, being that there were a lot sawmills around back in it's time I'm thinking it powered some of the mill machinery. Still looking into it, if I get more info on it I will let you know!

Artist's Description

This fine old steam engine sits outside of a cold storage facility in Wesley, ME. It was recently rescued from a salvage crew who wanted to remove it and cut it up for scrap metal. My “Oldman” (his word’s not mine) begged, pleaded, cried and whined to the powers that be to leave it in place where it has been for many years and where it is a popular point of interest to tourists and fans of vintage machinery. I applaud his efforts to save this fine old machine from the salvage yard and feel it was worth any groveling he had to do to accomplish it! A big accolade must be given to the powers that be (Nat) for allowing us to keep this little piece of Americana.
